As you have been reading on this website, I have been around the internet for a very long time. I was a member of 3 different groups who were testing, creating, etc.

When they were thinking up the use of cookies, it was one specific industry that was selling access to their websites. They needed a way to keep track of where they had been so they knew what pages they hadn't seen yet.

They brought it to a group for testing. When they introduced the concept, they described the usage, the need for it and asked us to test it so we could track their progress and comment on it, to they could make improvements. I was one of those testers.

They said that their temporary name of the project would be called cookies. They knew that it wasn't a great name but they needed to call it something. They would come up with a better name before they released it. As you can see they never did come up with a better name.

These are text files, they can't change anything on your computer, they can't follow you across the internet, they are designed to make your use of their own site(s) a better, more robust experience.

When you click on, save my username, that is saved in a cookie. As you surf their site, it remembers the pages that you've been to so you don't have to remember it yourself.

That's about it, accepting all cookies will not harm you or your computer.
